Oh, again that "java error; invalid format"-problem on a Samsung model.

We finally need to narrow down the reason of that problem - hope you can help us there !

For the older CEDICT versions see here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/dictionarymid/files/dictionary%20EngChi%20(CEDICT) (https://sourceforge.net/projects/dictionarymid/files/dictionary%20EngChi%20(CEDICT))

Maybe there is an issue with the jar file size on your Samsung ? Could you try to install the Webster's dictionary: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/dictionarymid/DictionaryForMIDs_3.4.0_EnfDef_Webster.zip?download (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/dictionarymid/DictionaryForMIDs_3.4.0_EnfDef_Webster.zip?download) ?

And I have one question: could you try to install the jar file only (not the jad file) ?

Regards,
Gert

*update*

I finally go the dictionary working on my samsung S5230.

In short the steps are:Re: Cannot install Dictionary for MIDs English-Chinese

1) get an mini SD memory card (i couldn't transfer the unpacked jar file with the samsung new pc studio to the internal phone memory, as there seems to be a strange number of files restriction. Further it seems that the S5230 cannot handle big jar files, that's why you have to unpack the jar file)
2) unpack the *.jar file of the dictionary on your computer
3) transfer the unpacked *.jar file to your mini SD memory card (don't use samsung's tool, use an SD adapter and your cardreader)
4) install the "empty version" of the dictionary
5) reboot the phone
6) run the empty dictionary and go to "Settings->Dictionary -> Browse" and point to the directory where you copied the unpacked *.jar file to
7) run the dictionary and have fun

Thanks to all the good people for all the work with the dictionary! it's a great piece of software...

cheers,
Thomas

thats my reply taiwantom

1.
Let me sure that there is a size problem with your phone.
Could you please try to install each of the following 3 files:
http://www.kugihan.de/dict/download/test_versions/samsung/size1.jar (http://www.kugihan.de/dict/download/test_versions/samsung/size1.jar)
http://www.kugihan.de/dict/download/test_versions/samsung/size2.jar (http://www.kugihan.de/dict/download/test_versions/samsung/size2.jar)
http://www.kugihan.de/dict/download/test_versions/samsung/size3.jar (http://www.kugihan.de/dict/download/test_versions/samsung/size3.jar)
Note: these are only files for installation tests; none of these dictionaries will really work
If one of them can be installed on your Samsung, then it is sure that your Samsung has a size problem.

2.
If there is a size problem, then you can use the 'loadable dictionaries'.
For using the 'loadable dictionaries', there are a few options. You can copy the file DictionaryForMIDs_ChiEng_CEDICT.jar somewhere on your cell phone. You will have to copy this file; do not try to install this file as application. Maybe someone can explain to you how this works with your 'new pc studio'

Note that 'loadable dictionaries' are in experimental stage.  I do not like to read bad reports about DictionaryForMIDs because the 'loadable dictionaries' do not run nicely on someone's mobile.

Gert

Post by: Gert on 02. June 2010, 18:08:40
Oh, one more hint: if you use 'loadable dictionaries', please install that version http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/dictionarymid/DictionaryForMIDs_3.5.0_empty.zip?download (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/dictionarymid/DictionaryForMIDs_3.5.0_empty.zip?download). Version 3.5.0 contains several improvements for 'loadable dictionaries' compared to 3.4.0.

But first please let us know the result of installing the size.jar files. It is important that we know if there is a size problem on Samsung mobiles.

Thank you for testing !

Post by: Gert on 03. June 2010, 07:28:07
Ok, thank you very much for testing !

So the "invalid format" error seems to be a wrong error message; your Samsung should instead report "file size too large".

About the "installation failed", I do not know why that message shows up.

Anyway, because your Samsung cannot run the 3.4.0 CEDICT due to size limitations, you need to try the "loadable dictionaries". Good that you already installed 3.5.0 empty.

There is a description for using "loadable dictionaries" here: http://dictionarymid.sourceforge.net/faqLoadableDictionaries.html (http://dictionarymid.sourceforge.net/faqLoadableDictionaries.html). Hmmmm, probably you should use Alternative 2.

Can you try to do the steps for Alternative 2 ?

You must find out how to copy the 'dictionary' folder with all its files from your PC to your Samsung device. I guess that your pc studio is able to do this.

Ok, just let us know about your progress and your problems !

Regards,
Gert

Hallo Gert,

for Alternative 1 i have to write:

file:///External memory/Other files/Dictionary/DictionaryForMIDs_Chi_Eng_CEDICT.jar

and for Alternative 2:

file:///External memory/Other files   (the folder dictionary with the files is in Other files)

Is that correct ??

Can you take a look, please, maybe you see any mistake.

I have tried both Alternatives, but it doesnt work.

Makes me desperate. Sorry

Post by: Gert on 03. June 2010, 16:13:21
Ah, don't get desperate - hey you are participating in the testing of a new DictionaryForMIDs feature - the "loadable dictionaries"   ;D

For Alternative 2, can you rename the folder "Dictionary" to "dictionary" (lower case d) ? Just to be sure that there is no problem with case sensitivity.

Apart from that the path looks ok for me. However I do not know about the file naming on Samsungs. Are you sure about the "External Memory/Other files" path ?

Hey, just use the file system browser to locate the file/folder: when you are in 'path' edit field then, you there is a menu item "browser". With that browser you can choose the directory/file.

And remember: never give up ...  8)

with your good support, how i can give up

Hey, just use the file system browser to locate the file/folder: when you are in 'path' edit field then, you there is a menu item "browser". With that browser you can choose the directory/file. - sorry, but this browser doesnt exist. when i open the empty dict and i get into settings to dictionary path and i tip on the line, there doesnt open any browser. my cellphone open a new window for typing (the path), thats all.

The browser can be opened from the menu when you have focused the 'dictionary path field'. Well, it is a bit tricky, because different cell phone manufacturers have different Java implementations, so the way of opening the browser can be slightly different from one cell phone to another.

I attached two screenshots. The first one shows the menu when the focus is on the 'dictionary path field'. Note that now there is the menu item "Browser" (this item only shows up when the 'dictionary path field' is selected !). The second is a sample screenshot from the opened browser.

Somehow it should be possible also for your Samsung to open that browser ... we just need to find out how.

hi,

this is the menue of the empty dict, where you can go to the settings.

i think my problem is now, the emty dict is running, but i dont know how to write the exact path. i tried already a lot of different ways but nothing works.
Title: Re: samsung gt-s5600h - Cannot install Dictionary for MIDs English-Chinese
Post by: Gert on 05. June 2010, 16:27:05
The browser will automatically set the correct path. We just need to open the browser.

So let me understand:
1. When you press "Menu" after DictionaryForMIDs starts up, then you get the full menu, including "Settings", "Info", "Exit", etc.
2. When you press "Menu" in the "dictionary path field", then no menu is displayed. Instead a text field opens, where you can enter the path.

Is 1. and 2. correct ?

If yes, then I have one more question:
3. When you open the "Settings" dialogue, is there also a Menu item that you can press (directly after opening the "Settings" dialogue) ? What happens if you press that Menu item in the Settings dialogue ? [The Settings dialogue is where you can enter the search settings; and also enter the dictionary path]

Too bad that Samsung does not provide a usable emulator for their phones, such as for example Nokia does. If they had an usable emulator, then it would be easy for me to do the testing.

Gert

You see, finally we will get there ;)

Please, do uninstall all DictionaryForMIDs applications from your Samsung; then reinstall only the 3.5.0 empty and try again.

Possibly the error comes up because of some language settings that were saved in a previous DictionaryForMIDs installation. Those settings will be deleted when you uninstall all DictionaryForMIDs applications.

Gert

Just again use the browser to set the path to the dictionary (please also post the dictionary path here in the forum); then exit the DictionaryForMIDs application and start again. And let us know the result.

Here is a new version that will solve your problems: http://www.kugihan.de/dict/download/test_versions/3.5.2/DictionaryForMIDs.jar (http://www.kugihan.de/dict/download/test_versions/3.5.2/DictionaryForMIDs.jar)

One bug is fixed in that version for "Alternative 2".

"Alternative 1" should work also, but _extremely_ slow for the huge CEDICT (too slow to be usable; you will have to use Alternative 2).

And here is my problem: "Alternative 1" works, because the code is not obfuscated; if I obfuscate the code, then there is this "java.lang.Error: Static initializer: ArrayIndexOutOfBounds" error. No clue what is damaged by the obfuscator here. Well, that is only my problem, don't get bothered with that technical problem.

Please keep me informed about your test results !

Gert

hello gert,

congratulations, we got it. you make a great job.

i put the path by alternative 2.

but there is a small problem.

i followed exactly the describtion. but when i use the browser to select the path i must browse until the folder with jar file and only there i can select (jar file) it. before it is not possible. but necessary is to select the folder where is the jar file ( in my case the folder is called "Dictionary" ).
so i selected the jar file: went back into the main menue with the setting, tip once again on the path line, my textmenue open with the whole path and i start do delete the name of the jar file.
so the path will point only to the folder and than the dict it is working.

1. Select the path with the browser in the menue
file:///mmc/Other files/Dictionary/DictionaryForMIDs_3.4.0_ChiEng_CEDICT.jar
mmc = memorycard

2. the path which is working
file:///mmc/Other files/Dictionary/

:)

maybe this is a specific samsung problem.

well gert, many many thanks for your great support.

p.s: how i can know if there is any update in the dictionary ??

There is something that amazes me: most of the tasks on the DictionaryForMIDs project have nothing to do with SW development/programming. But when people read 'support' they usually think SW development.

I looked at your great screenshots: in the picture "1_0_path_menu.jpg" the top entry is "..", the second entry is ".", the third one is "DictionaryForMIDs.jar".

In order to select the directory, you need to select the second entry (".").

Does that answer this:

Besides, could you post some more of your experiences; for example in the Settings Dialoge, could you activate the Statistics and translate a word with only one translation result, and let us know the response time ?

And really no confirmation messages ? I thought usually there are plenty of these confirmation messages !

Thanks,
Gert

In order to select the directory, you need to select the second entry (".").
you are right, the correctpath must point to the folder in which contains the  "dict.jar"  file.

i post some more pics, i think this helps more than any describtion.

for all users of samsung mobile phones, there is a big confusion to write the right path name.  i put all my applications on the memory card.  on my cell phone (you see on the pic) it is called "memory card". ON THE TOOL FROM SAMSUNG CALLED NPC OR NEW PC STUDIO< THE MEMORY CARD IS CALLED< "EXTERNAL MEMORY
if you open the settings in the dict menue and you browse through the folders you will find the memory card< called " mmc">

there is only one confirmation message< the response time is good>

take a look at the pics>

is there somebody responsible for the content of the dict??

i am using a memory card and i installed the dict on the memory card. but this doesnt matter.

first of all you must install the empty dict. 3.5 see gerts describtion

than install the dict., i think 3.4 and follow the installation describtion in this topic. look at the pics for write the right settings.

an other point if the pics are not helping you.

here you can find a good installation describtion, use alternative 2

http://dictionarymid.sourceforge.net/faqLoadableDictionaries.html

as i told you before, read it carefully, twice or three times and follow exactly the describtion.

you must be patient, i also was very exhausted, nearly want to give up, but at the end i got it.

;D

I finally got it to install, i realized that I had to unzip twice by unzipping the .jar file. One last question is there anyway to search for words using pinyin?

wow, thats great.

yes you are right, i have done more or less the same fault. i made only o double klick on the .jar fil and thought it will be unzipped. this is wrong. you must really unzip it.

sorry, there is now way in the dictionary to search for pinyin. i am missing this, too

maybe, we put this idea on the forum.

also, if you use the dict and forget to close it, it keep on running until the battery is out.

Important for the installation:

read carefully the instructions on this site: http://dictionarymid.sourceforge.net/faqLoadableDictionaries.html

You must extract the zipped .jar file.

Do not only copy it or makeing a double klick on the file. ( if have done this mistake, it doesnt work )
